  • Meet the Team: Paul Young

Introducing Paul Young, the Branch Manager at our Melbourne Sales Branch, who started as a Service Manager in 1999 and moved through the company to where he is today. We recently chatted with Paul about his passion and extensive knowledge of the modular construction industry.

Tell us about the role you play at ATCO Structures.

I’m currently the Victorian Branch Manager at ATCO Structures, and I’ve been proud to be part of the company for 26 years. I began my journey as a Service Manager, later moving into the Operations Manager role, then North Queensland Branch Manager, before taking on my current position. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of seeing the business evolve, and what I enjoy most is the people — both the dedicated team I work with and the clients we support. ATCO has consistently fostered a strong culture of collaboration and innovation, making it a rewarding place to build a career.

Explain ways you provide value and innovative solutions for your clients.

I focus on understanding each client’s specific needs and tailoring modular solutions that maximise efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Whether it’s through optimising layouts, reducing lead times, or integrating sustainable materials, I aim to deliver solutions that go beyond the standard product. Collaboration and proactive communication are key — they ensure projects are delivered smoothly and meet every expectation.

In your opinion, what makes modular construction better than traditional construction methods?

Modular construction offers significant advantages in speed, quality, and sustainability. Projects can be completed faster since site preparation and module fabrication occur simultaneously. Quality is more consistent because modules are built in a controlled environment, reducing weather-related risks. Additionally, modular construction generates less waste and allows structures to be relocated or repurposed, supporting circular economy principles.

What is the most memorable ATCO Structures project that you have participated in and why?

Two standout projects for me have been the Bamaga Tavern Hotel, Bamaga and the RTA Laboratory, Amrun. Both presented complex challenges, but through great teamwork and smart modular design, we delivered high-quality outcomes that made a real impact for our clients and their communities in extremely remote locations.

Where would you like to see modular construction products utilised more, and why?

I’d love to see modular solutions used more in social housing. These sectors often face tight deadlines and budgets, and modular construction can deliver high-quality, adaptable spaces much faster than traditional builds. It’s also ideal for responding to urgent infrastructure needs, such as community recovery or population growth.

Regarding your career, what’s the best advice you have been given, and how does it influence your day-to-day job?

The best advice I’ve received is to “focus on solutions, not problems.” This mindset helps me approach challenges with creativity and resilience. It reminds me that every obstacle is an opportunity to innovate and improve, both personally and professionally.

What do you hope will be your lasting impact on ATCO Structures?

I hope to be remembered for contributing to a culture of innovation and client trust. Whether through implementing more efficient project delivery processes, fostering teamwork, or helping clients realise the full potential of ATCO, I aim for my work to leave a positive and lasting impact on ATCO’s growth and reputation.
